from the crowded cities, and in fact, the 2000 Census reveals that a second wave of white flight is occurring in more modern times (2002). The causes are complex and disputable (2002). William H. Frey for example who coined the term "new white flight" sees that there is a dispersal accelerating to outer suburbs and, regionally, to an even whiter Sunbelt (2002). Frey contends that such a relocation is not only a flight from immigrants or minorities, but also has to do with economics (2002). The high cost of city living has propelled people to pack and he contends that the movement will supersede its postwar predecessor in creating wider regional separation of the countrys mostly suburban white areas from the more urban minority populations (2002). Thus, in addition to movement within cities, or from cities to suburbs, one sees movement to less expensive regions of the country. Roderick J. Harrison, an associate professor of sociology and anthropology agrees with Frey that white migration is occurring and that it is primarily lifestyle-driven ("The New," 2002). However, he does not use the term "white flight" to denote this migration, and argues that doing so compromises the comprehension of what white flight really means (2002). He also goes on to say that the white flight that actually is still occurring, is not at a greater level, but probably at a reduced level in todays day and age (2002). Frey and Harrison both use recent Census data to substantiate their arguments and although the numbers may be indisputable, the reasons for the new white migration are subject to debate (2002).
