acknowledged problem in American society. These types of crimes are often viewed as less serious than typical crimes such as burglary, rape, and even murder. In reality, however, white collar crimes can, and do, encompass more serious predatory types of crime. White collar criminals commit crimes for essentially the same reason that more socially chagrined criminals do. They commit crimes for their own personal profit. White collar crime is sometimes viewed as a victimless crime. Nothing, however, could be further from the truth. Someone has to pay for moneys that are diverted. For every job that is unfairly appointed, someone does not get the job they deserve. Fortunately, the media is finally beginning to take white collar crime to task. While in previous years these types of crimes received less attention than other crimes, today they are increasingly focused on by a media that is becoming ever more enlightened about their seriousness. One example of a well-written article involving white collar crime can be found in the News Section of the June 30, 2007 edition of the Charleston Gazette. That article is the Associated Press Article "Ala. ex-governor, fired CEO in prison". Comparing this article to accounts on the World Wide Web of situation that ultimately landed these criminals in jail, it is obvious that the standards of professional journalism were in play when this particular article was written.
