the book, "White Badge : A Novel of Korea," by Ahn Junghyo, the author has provided the reader with a very intriguing and hard hitting look at the realities of
war. Most books detail the battles and the political aspects of war, but in "White Badge" we see the small stories that illustrate the people and the conditions that exist
in many different examples. Throughout this book the reader is constantly faced with the realities of war that illustrate just how devastating and real this act of violence is. In
an examination of the thrust of this book we explore and discuss four different segments therein. In the first section to be illustrated we see the narrator as
a man who is clearly not of the common people. He dresses in a suit and feels very out of place when walking through the crowds in the park. We
can see that he longs for some sort of simpler pace in life as he notices the people and the energy that surrounded him. He, so out of place, states,
"I joined this flowing procession of the cheerful" (Junghyo, 1989; p. 3). He goes on for quite some time giving the impression that he is lost and is unable to
enjoy this world he sees revolving around him, while at the same time we are given the impression that there is something heavier and more substantial then just his own
lack of joy due to his inability to be an active part of the scene. It is about this time that he throws in a few lines which pertain to
rifles and violence which give the reader quite a shock in regards to the subject of the images illustrated. It is at this point that we see the man close
