humorous or what the elements of comedy may be. There are, when we think about it, many elements which make something funny. For example, comedy often entails describing common human
suffering in a humorous or sarcastic manner that allows us to laugh at our own pain. At other times, if we look closely, we will see ourselves laughing at the
expense of others. There are many elements to comedy and many forms which comedy can take. In the following paper we examine two separate movies and then offer up an
examination of which film presents comedy more successfully in terms of comedic theory. The films discussed and examined are "While You Were Sleeping" (1995) and "The Importance of Being Earnest"
(1952). While You Were Sleeping In the film "While You Were Sleeping" we are given a young woman, an orphan, who works at the subway in a glass booth
selling tickets. She longs for more and especially longs for romance. In many ways her desire for that romance is very simple and old-fashioned. As one author states, "To see
While You Were Sleeping (Hollywood) is like traveling back to the films of Deanna Durbin (when she wasnt singing) and June Allyson--or even a bit further back to Madge Evans
and Florence Rice. Most of their films seemed to derive from Colliers Magazine stories that had one interchangeable heroine whose nose wrinkled when she laughed and who had a boyfriend
named Tim" (Kauffmann, 1995; p. 28). It is a relatively simple tale of a young woman who dreams about this handsome business man she sells tickets to every day.
