to show that a deficiency and weakness in respect to Chinas leadership is the cause of its lack of success. When comparing it to Japans history, this is accentuated.
TEAM B: While it is true that Japan fared better than China, the things that caused the detrimental problems in China is due to things that are beyond
the nations control. it should be noted that the latter part of Chinese history--and particularly during the 1800s and 1900s--there was a great deal of strife inclusive of famines and
civil unrest ("China," 2003). Guofan Zeng for example was a good Chinese leader during the time period. Sometimes, one does not have much to work with. Zeng had been challenged.
TEAM A: It is true that China did have some good leaders, but China never developed a good system of leadership. During the middle portion of the nineteenth century, Japan
had divided executive power ("Bill," 1993). There had been an emperor there who lived in Kyoto but authority in respect to the royal family was declining for quite a few
centuries (1993). Real power then had been held by a warlord who was called a shogun (1993). This was not a good situation but things changed. TEAM B:
China still does not do much worse than Japan however. China was still a viable economic force to reckon with at the time. TEAM A: I am not totally disagreeing
but Japan was able to create viable change. What happened was that Japan did cut itself off from much of the world and did not trade but in 1853,
