Who is sorrowful? What was the nature of the sorrow? Why does it have to be kept secret? Like any successful title, Van Der Zees draws the reader in and
invites him or her to engage with her story in a direct and interactive fashion. The reader is already engaged before even reading the first line of the story. And
yet, Van Der Zees choice of title is not merely sensational or superficially mysterious. Rather, it functions in key ways: as a literal description of the story, as a hint
to the storys theme, and on a technical level, as a brilliant aesthetic device. In this paragraph, the student summarizes the story. Before
addressing those matters, however, a brief summary of the story is in order. In the story, a man named Kai interrogates his fianc?e Faye about why shes made a secret
appointment with a therapist. Faye tells Kai its because she has grief she needs to deal with. When pressed for more information, Faye tells Kai she cant marry him, steals
his car, and drives to her home. Sealing herself in her room, she longs for Kai, but tells herself the marriage can never be because of the information she kept
from Kai. Kai arrives, however, and impresses upon her that she must tell him the truth and that theyll face it together. Finally, Faye reveals that she is unable to
bear children, and thus cant see herself having a part in Kais dreams of having a home and family. Kai reassures her that he loves her and theyll work through
any problem. The two of them do get married and adopt several children, and Faye reflects that shes happy to have taken this path. In the next three paragraphs, the
