American Worship-the author suggests that while democracy flourishes today, it is not exactly the type of democracy that was created years ago. In fact, it is a misnomer that todays
America is a true democracy. Throughout the book, the concept is explored and defined. The book opens, in the Introduction, with the statement: "It is the purpose of this book
to present and foster criticism of modern democracy" (Samons, 2004, p. 1). Indeed, the rest of the book reads like a criticism of modern democracy. The nature of the book
is scholarly. It is published by a university press. Loren J. Samons is a professor and appears to be well versed on the subject of Greek democracy. Hence, the book
has a sense of authenticity. Of course, it is also injected with many opinions, conjecture, and comparisons, as the author delves into modernity. There are scholarly references included and while
the work seems to be suited for a scholarly audience, it provides basic information for the average intellectual. That is, someone without a background in the subject will comprehend it,
but it is written in the tradition of other high level scholarship. In other words, it is not light reading, nor is it geared for someone who already knows much
about Athens. That said, this will appeal to those with much knowledge about the roots of democracy. The author does not reiterate bland facts, but includes commentary throughout the
entire book. For example, one line in the book is as follows: "These considerations dictate that the most penetrating question to ask about the Peloponnesian Wars causes is not simply
why it occurred but rather why the war broke out precisely when it did, and then, why it lasted so much longer and spread so much further than other classical
