that is different. For instance, neorealism has to do with a film movement, not a philosophical movement. The Encarta World English Dictionary (1999) defines neorealism as "a style filmmaking developed
in Italy in the 1940s by directors such as Rossellini, De Sica, and Visconti, dealing typically with the problems of ordinary working-class life." Neorealism reached its peak in the
decade between 1945 and 1955 (Google, 2007). It is a style that relies on sharp contrasts, such as between black and white and it even attempts to follow a documentary-type
of film-making (Google, 2007). It was originally intended to show the realities of war and more specifically, those realities in Europe (Google, 2007). Storylines put regular kinds of people in
situations that were deemed to be real and factual or at least bordering on fact (Google, 2007). As Ratner (2006) points out, there arent any absolutes or universals in
neorealism. One thing the Italian movement did was move film-makers into real locations rather than in the studios (Ratner, 2006). That was certainly new. Italian film-makers had been under the
rule of Mussolini for a long time, which changed by the end of the Second World War and the Italian film industry wanted to make movies that were more in
line with their lives (Ratner, 2006). Besides the political changes, there were economic changes, Italy was moving from an agricultural to an industrial economy (Ratner, 2006). This new style of
film allowed Italians to express their own ideas in a more factual way (Ratner, 2006). Neoliberalism is interesting because the term itself is seldom used in the United States
(Martinez and Garcia, n.d.). Liberalism, as a term, may refer to political ideas, economic ideas, religious ideas, social ideas or other genres of ideas (Treanor, 2006; Martinez and Garcia, n.d.).
