Gas prices are very high and some wonder how the cost can be lowered. First, a bit of history is warranted. In 1981, gasoline was at an all time high
at $1.38 per gallon and it would drop to about 95 cents in 1986 (Woodward and Middelkauf et al. 163). It remained at about 95 cents through 1990 (Woodward and
Middelkauf et al. 163). During the 1990s, the price crept up a bit. The average price of gas for the decade was $1.17 per gallon (Crawley). In examining the issue
in 2008, it is clear that the price of gas has more than tripled in a short period of time. Whatever the cause, the problem is how can gas
prices be lowered today. Of course, understanding the cause is important in the scheme of things. If the oil companies are making a great deal of profit, the solution could
be in legislation. In fact, both Clinton and Obama have gone on record to say that they would impose a windfall profits tax on oil companies (Crawley). If the problem
is related to supply and demand, decreasing demand by seeking alternatives to automobiles that require a lot of gas might be the answer. Thus far, there have been attempts to
deal with this problem such as recommendations to get rid of gas taxes temporarily in an effort to provide relief for travelers. Crawley sees the answer as being the adoption
of a good energy policy. It may be the case that the adoption of energy policies conducive to lowering gas prices is key to the solution. Yet, it also pays
to examine simple ways to lower costs at the pump. Why? Through exploring both possible causes and ways to cut costs, answers may come forth in respect to resolving the
