the world at large and could essentially explore itself (McDonald, 2003). He rejected sensory information, something that broke from the tradition of Aristotle (2003). In other words, Descartes did
not trust the senses to be correct and many people think of the senses as something that helps them comprehend the world. If Descartes is right then the thinking mind
is the hallmark of humanness. In essence, thinking, reasoning and contemplating are parts of what it is to be human. Descartes differentiates humans from other creatures by this ability. Of
course, the thinking mind is not completely accurate. Some theorists believe that one needs to feel or experience things and that thoughts are really only peripheral. Thoughts are only something
that the human being does but is not who someone is. This is the information gleaned from modern day philosophers like Eckart Tolle and Woerner Eckhart, as well as concepts
that are aligned with Buddhism and other age old disciplines. The idea that one must experience something instead of thinking about it is an idea that makes sense. Descartes went
the other way, contending that it is the thought process that defines the human being or what it is to be human. However, while Descartes cogito does not perhaps
dissolve all doubt, it certainly provides much support for the notion of existence. If one is thinking, then that seems to at least provide some support for that notion. While
