Our ideas of what it means to be American have changed dramatically over time. Since the arrival of peoples of European
origins to these shores, however, those ideas were more prevalently centered around them rather than the indigenous peoples (that were, in fact, the original Americans) or any of the other
peoples that made this country their home. These ideas formulated the "idealized" America. Our ideas of what it meant to be an American in actuality were ideas of
what it means to be a white mainstream American, not a black American, a Native American, an Asian American or any of the other manifestations of "American" that combined to
form the real America as opposed to the idealized America. Over time, however, other ideas of the "idealized" America prevailed. These ideas encompassed such concepts as equality and
the democratic process. They also encompassed the right to speak out against what was wrong. By being able to identify wrongs we could work collectively to correct them.
While it took almost two centuries for the ideas of equality and democracy to truly take effect, they did ultimately do just that and the real America finally emerged.
