Whether a person is a private or a general, there are particular values that are expected of a member of the Army. However, when one is a leader in the
Army, through rank or through assignment concerning a particular task, these values are expected to be quite evident within the individual. The following paper examines what it means and what
it takes to be a leader in the Army. What it Means to be a Leader in the Army As mentioned, any member of the Army is expected to
possess particular values that are specific to the Army and the military. Those values are essentially as follows: loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage (Forscom, 2007).
All of these values play a vital role in the Army and its members, and when speaking of leaders they are values that are intensified through the position of leadership.
For example, when speaking of loyalty there is the basic understanding that a member of the Army must be loyal to their nation, their government, their branch of the military,
their superiors and their fellow soldiers. "Soldiers fight for each other-loyalty is that commitment" (Forscom, 2007). Where a leader is concerned, however, they must demonstrate an extra level of loyalty
so that the soldiers ultimately respect and prove loyal to the leadership. "The loyalty of your people is a gift they give you when, and only when, you deserve it-when
you train them well, treat them fairly, and live by the concepts you talk about" (Forscom, 2007). In this example one sees that through leadership the individual must demonstrate a
very strong adherence to the values, and that the leader needs to exhibit those values in such an obvious manner that they serve as an example of what the Army
