half empty. In other words, they have something--a situation, a problem, a concept--and they look at things in a good light. If they are handed a glass of water they
do not say "Hey, this glass is half empty! What a rip off. I was really thirsty. How can the host do this to me? It is not fair." They
say instead "Thank you for this wonderful glass of water. It is half full and just the right amount." A student writing on this subject will of course want to
point out that the illustration is simply an analogy and not to be taken literally. Few people really care about how much water they are provided. Yet, it is a
good analogy and how life is viewed can be positive or negative. The world is filled with complainers, people who exude negativity and those who think that the world will
end. The world is doomed and many embrace such a philosophy, sometimes unwittingly. They may try to live a good life that is enjoyable but find that they worry about
everything and are never satisfied. If they get a raise, they are not grateful. Rather, they complain that they should have gotten more. This is a dismal view and the
antithesis of what an optimist will think. To an optimist, every cloud has a sliver lining. Every situation is an opportunity for change. Everything is looked at with the greatest
of hopes and even in dismal situations such as funerals, the optimists can say something nice such as "She is looking down upon you." or "Memories of her will always
be with you." In every situation, there can be something found that is inspiring and an optimist will find that. An optimist is a person who often has a smile
