generally perceived as potential terrorists and primarily categorized, or stereotyped, as particular types of people. The following paper examines what an Arab American is and what the problems are in
our society relating to the various perceptions and stereotypes. What is an Arab American? One of the most common stereotypes about
Arab Americans is that they are terrorists, are potential terrorists, or that they know and are connected with a terrorist. This particular writer/researcher has heard of and read many instances
where people of Arab descent were discriminated against or abused. Right after 9/11 there were many instances where Arab, or Middle East, run stores or businesses where bombarded with graffiti
and vandalism. There are stories of people being turned away at restaurants or even brought in for questioning because of their "apparent" descent. There is much information about how many
Arab Americans are clearly singled out in airports and other potentially publicly threatened institutions. "Everywhere Muslim women wearing head coverings have been harassed, insulted or beaten. There are many reports
of harassment of Arab-American children at school" (Wingfield, 2002). While such incidents have likely declined in recent times, the tension and fear and stereotypes are still there.
Again, the stereotypes never look beyond the color of the skin, or the accent, or the clothing. It is immediately assumed they have some connection,
however, vague, with terrorism. However, many of these people are here and are citizens and many are not first generation Arabs. For example, there are, have been, many political figures
that are Arab Americans: "Republican Senator John Sununu of New Hampshire, Governor of Maine John Baldacci, Governor of Indiana Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr., Republican Congressman Ray LaHood of Illinois, Democratic
