plagued mankind for centuries. Is it religion that gives man his morality, or is it some sort of barometer that tells him what is right or wrong that is intrinsic?
Sophists, in the Greek world, during the fifth century B.C., were probably the first thinkers to raise critical questions about the idea of moral conduct (Honderich, 1995). Yet, the problem
persists as it is difficult to discern what is moral and what is not. In a recent election campaign related to the governorship
of New Jersey, the Republican candidate is depicted as immoral because he does not want to give a woman the right to choose an abortion, even in cases of rape
and incest. The debate is heated, but what is the moral answer to that question? Are those who believe abortion is murder correct, or is it morally superior to allow
a twelve year old rape victim to have an abortion? The problem with morality is that it is relative and that there are situations that seem to pose quandaries, even
for the most devout moral critics. It is relative to religion, current ideation and society as a unit. At the same time, some might say that morality is not relative,
and that people merely make it so. Thus, the problem at hand is quite intriguing.
