community. At the same time, cities vary so much that it makes them difficult to classify. For example, New York City is a city, but it is enormous, much larger
than say, Billings, Montana or Burlington, Vermont. Each of the cities that exist throughout the world have unique characteristics, something that comes through in Kleniewskis (1997) work that helps to
define just what a city is. Of course, it is hard to define the term "city" exactly because the word means so many things. Yet, Kleniewski (1997) does delve into
city life and asks what makes an entity a city. There are many factors that go into the building of a metropolitan area. In understanding what a city is, it
helps to look at the history of cities as well as their purpose. Chappell (2001) sees the purpose of the city as follows: "I would submit that the purpose of
a city today is exactly what a primary purpose of cities has always been: to maximize the number of human interactions among strangers and to minimize travel." Of course, that
is one interpretation and certainly Kleniewskis take on cities is quite different as she melds a variety of ideas into one volume that examines urban life and helps one determine
a precise definition of a city. The principle features of metropolitan life--the vastness of the land, the notoriety, the meld of cultures, the attitude--all go into the definition of just
what a city is. In part, the development of city life helps to understand what it means to live in the city. In New York for example, there is a
