so strange. The introduction of Computed Axial Tomography (CAT or CT) has allowed medical professionals to examine any part of the human body, even soft organ tissues, without needing to
inject potentially dangerous dyes and tracking them via more common x-ray processes. Instead, and through a combination of an advanced x-ray system and computer technology, it is possible to capture
detailed representations of cross-sections of parts of the body. Over the past two to three decades, CAT scans have become nearly as common as the "traditional" x-ray used to show
broken bones, fluid in the lungs, and even dental cavities. Who Came Up With the Idea? According to information found at "The National Inventors Hall of Fame," (2003) Robert S.
Ledley (1926 - present) is credited with inventing the whole-body CT (Internet source). His early efforts in the area resulted in the Automatic Computerized Transverse Axial or the "ACTA scanner"
in 1973 at Georgetown University Medical School. As an indicator of what an important breakthrough this was in medicine, the student working on this project may want to note that
Ledleys original machine is now housed at the Smithsonian Institution. As with virtually any inventor, Ledley was convinced that he could take the technology even farther. Again referring to
information at the Inventors Hall of Fame, Ledley was: "... the first to do medical imaging and three-dimensional reconstructions and the first to use CT in radiation therapy planning for
