It is not a bad argument as it is true that no one escapes death and many do not want to trade their Twinkies and Cigarettes for a mere few years of perhaps scores of years on the planet Earth. At the same time, fitness buffs are not just forgoing cheesecake and chocolate to add a few years to their lives later on; rather, many people exercise and watch their diets in order to feel good in the present time. Feeling and looking good physically enhances self confidence and alleviates guilt. The possible years added to ones lifetime then is just an additional benefit. What such people desire is a state of wellness. What is wellness? One expert has said that the definition of wellness has changed over the years ("Introduction," 1999). Basically, he explains that wellness may be equated with a perspective or mind set; it is a way of looking at life that entails a disciplined, conscious pursuit of a dynamic state of well being, both physically and psychologically (1999). Such well being is not merely existing without getting obviously sick, but rather going beyond the mediocrity of the ordinary state and standard level of mind sets (1999). For example, the majority of Americans are out of shape and eat poorly. Some have conditions related to their neglect and pop pills to get around the high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels, for example. On the other hand, a fit person pursues wellness and takes vitamins, eats properly and exercises, thus avoiding many ailments common to the majority of the population.
