it as the study of existence and knowledge and morality. It is basically a discipline that addresses all of the unanswered questions of life and space and time. Religion attempts to do this but the dogma spouted by most religions leave many people empty and questioning and wanting more. Religion to some extent addresses the big questions, but philosophy answers them with logic. Religion can only provide dictates handed down from other generations, whereas philosophy offers thought on the subject that is not confined to scripture or one particular philosopher or God. Rather, philosophy is about probing questions and not necessarily getting succinct answers. Still, some proofs are acceptable by some philosophers and truthfully, skeptics will never be satisfied. Yet, philosophy provides an avenue of contemplation for everyone and helps one to address the larger questions such as why do human beings exist and what is morality? Existence looms large over philosophy. One may contemplate whether or not one does exist and the mere question will bring certain skepticism. How can someone question their own existence? Indeed, Descartes did this to an extent, but he did comprehend that he really did exist. The dictum "I think. Therefore I am," helps to explain why this is so. Descartes also questioned the ability of a dreamer to know whether or not he is dreaming. Many people do attribute psychic phenomena to dreams. Can dreams really predict the future? Might someone have a true out of body experience while dreaming? Might someone be able to speak with angels or contact the dead? Descartes contemplation of the dream was not nearly as complicated.
