A student writing on this subject will want to explore the problem by looking at morality first, as a general subject, before delving into specific areas. The question of morality has always intrigued man. In fact, it has been said that man is differentiated from other animals by his ability to reason. Thus, the only thing that would possess a human being to act in a way that is not pleasurable would be a higher reason. If man acted simply on instinct, as most four legged creatures do, he would be nothing more than just another species on this earth. The differentiation is thought to have come from a superior being. God endowed man with the ability to reason and demanded that humankind follow a higher order. God was to be obeyed. This position may be equated with moral realism, the idea that morality just exists and is an absolute. Debate surrounding morality did not end with the writing of biblical documents. In society, there continues to exist a vast chasm between many people who all consider themselves moral. In fact, a game called Scruples was created for fun but also shows that not all people think alike. For example, God had commanded that man should not steal. Yet, is it morally right to steal bread for ones starving children? Taken to extreme, if one did not have money for food and allowed a child to die they might even be considered guilty of murder. Yet, if they stole the bread, they would be guilty of theft. The dilemma may be resolved by the presumption that the end justifies the means. Yet, the problem still exists.
