the fall of the Roman Empire, and was still in the dark ages, the world saw the rise of Islam. The word Islam, in Arabic, means submission to the word
of God (or Allah, as he is known by in the Islamic tradition), and Islam is considered the third of the three great monotheistic religions (the other two being Judaism
and Christianity). Arabia, before the rise of Islam, was considered a very backward, primitive place. It was populated by nomadic barbarians. Most of the tribes were pagans
and worshiped objects such as trees, rocks, and other inanimate objects. There was a great deal of political disunity among the various tribes and tribal warfare was almost a
daily occurrence in that particular part of the world. The religion known as Islam began with an individual man, the prophet Mohammed. He was born in the city of
Mecca (in what is today Saudi Arabia) in the year 571 A. D., and although Mecca was an important city, it was not immune from the tribal warfare and religious
superstitions that was found in the surrounding regions (Durant, 2002). Mohammed, even as a young man, was deeply troubled by all the bloodshed and immorality that he saw on
