any craft (Fine Arts, 2003). It is the topic of a great deal of debate, and a topic that tends to confuse a great number of people. For example, is
fine art something that automatically costs a great deal of money to purchase, or can fine art be found in the most humble of surroundings, costing next to nothing? There
is also the question of the content of the work, something which can, perhaps without words, impart an impression of fine art. Generally we assume that fine art is likely
art from the past, such as a painting by Rembrandt, or some other piece of art often only found in a fine art museum. Bearing in mind the vague and
allusive definition of fine art, the following paper attempts to examine what fine art is, and what makes fine art. What is Fine Art? From one perspective we
note that "the word fine comes from the Latin finis, meaning end. So Fine Art is art that is an end-in-itself and not meant to illustrate or promote something else"
(Fine Arts, 2003). This end could possibly indicate a message of sorts, or simply mean that the artist has made a piece of art which has described something they know,
something they feel, or something they are. When the art is finished it has found its end, and it is complete. From another perspective, however, we note that "The
argument about what is commercial art and what is fine art is similar to the argument about what is craft and what is art. There is certainly art in commercial
art and also in craft, but I think what distinguishes fine art for me is that fine art requires taking extreme risks. Its about the process of birth and growth,"
