on individual freedoms and by defining individualism we discover the true meaning of democracy. BEING INDIVIDUALS IN OUR COUNTRY Interpreting individualism as a means by which to illustrate how
society has lost its compassion for all others is a simple matter of applying social responsibility. To define the term, its fundamental consideration is to be aware of the
impacts ones actions have upon the rest of society. Far too many people believe that it is their inherent right as a human being to exercise whatever choices they
see fit, in spite of the fact that their selfish actions may cause physical harm or emotional pain to others. Indeed, this is the essence of social responsibility: to
make a conscious effort to incorporate societys feelings, as a whole, rather than merely focusing upon the singular desires of oneself. Speaking directly to the basic nature of social responsibility,
man has an inalienable right to individualism provided he does not directly injure the person or property of another on the way. "A culture whose highest priorities include self-aggrandizement,
not to mention entertainment, bears marked resemblances to, shall we say, less successful cultures. Like that of the late Roman Empire" (Murchison 25A). Indeed, there is no question
that man has the right to do just about anything he pleases just as long as it does not infringe upon the well-being of another. However, contemporary individualism has
taken on an entirely separate connotation than what it meant only decades ago, with a primarily negative stigma forever attached to ones singularity. One subject upon which Tocqueville expanded was
