Other systems are sometimes thought to be morally superior, but that is arguable. When Max Weber wrote the Protestant Work Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, he conveyed the idea
that there is a drive intrinsic to man. Further, it is attached to the idea that human beings by nature are competitive. That is actually what drives them and what
drives the economies of the world. There are many examples of this drive that seems to be behind the capitalist systems. Perhaps the greatest example of this idea
that humans thrive on competition is the stereotypical government employee. Many people employed by branches of the U.S. government-the I.R.S., the motor vehicle bureaus-- are incompetent and work slowly. There
is no drive to succeed. The workers daydream and when the work day is over, they go home and dread the next day. They often feel as if they are
in a rut. Compare that lifestyle to the hard working, up and coming executive. He or she wakes up in the morning eager to make money, to do better, to
accomplish more and receive monetary rewards in the future. There is zest for living in this second example as the individual makes his way up the proverbial corporate ladder. These
examples at least attempt to also explain why capitalism works so well. Yes, government employees live in a capitalist country, but they might as well be living in a socialist
culture. There is no competition in their work environment so they do not see the fruits of capitalism as does their private sector counterpart. Another observation is that the
American welfare population generally lives in despair. They are given money and while some are able to escape work altogether, some are required to put in work hours. Generally, people
