is overdiagnosed. There is certainly a controversy about diagnosis and treatment, but a student writing on this subject should note that there are certain criteria with which many theorists
agree. ADHD is generally aligned with two major symptoms which are inattention and hyperactivity (Barkley, 1997). A point made by the DSMIII is as follows: "In the classroom, attentional difficulties
and impulsivity are evidenced by the childs not staying with tasks and having difficult organizing and completing work" (qtd. in Mayes & Erkulwater, 2008, p.330). Inattention is viewed as a
childs inability to respond to tasks, or follow the rules, as their playmates might (Barkley, 1997). The hyperactive behavior manifests in different ways such as fidgeting, the inability to sit
still, running, climbing more than other children, and being less likely to take turns or wait on line like the other children (Barkley, 1997). To a great extent the definition
of ADHD relies on what is typical for a child of a certain age group. Toddlers for example may have little self-control, but as children grow up, they are expected
to exhibit age appropriate behavior. When they do not, the teachers often make comments to the parents. The physician may also notice differences in a childs behavior in that it
violates the norm. Eventually, the child is examined and possibly diagnosed with ADHD. ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed disorder for those under the age of 18 (Mayes & Erkulwater,
2008). Approximately 8% Mayes & Erkulwater, 2008, p.309) of children between the ages of three and seven are diagnosed with ADHD and a bit above 4% (Mayes & Erkulwater, 2008,
