American Needs to Know about Terrorism," but since every American isnt here, I thought Id just talk to you. As some of you know, Ive been taking a course called
"Terrorism Today," and what Ive learned there has been eye-opening, to say the least. What Im about to tell you will make some of you extremely angry, but I would
ask you to try and set your emotions aside and consider the facts dispassionately. In order to understand terrorism and how to protect ourselves, we must first try to
understand why people resort to terrorist acts. After the terrible events of September 11, we grappled with an almost insurmountable problem: trying to understand why we had been so
viciously attacked. We were told that we were hated because we were free, and given what we know of the constraints of Islamic societies, we accepted this statement. However, this
statement is wrong. Just this year Ivan Eland wrote "public opinion polls in Islamic nations repeatedly show that people in those countries actually admire Americas political and economic freedom. They
also admire American wealth, technology, and even culture. So some other factor must be generating anti-U.S. hatred in these parts of the world" (Eland, 2006, p. 38). The fact
is that "spreading democracy" by force is not the answer-Eland reveals that there are fewer terrorists attacks in "un-free" societies than in democratic ones (Eland, 2006). In Iraq today, terrorism
is worse than it was under Saddam Hussein, and according to State Department data, terrorist attacks skyrocketed to 655 incidents in 2004 (Eland, 2006). There have been more terrorist attacks
in the three years since 9/11 than in the three years preceding it (Eland, 2006). I am pointing out these uncomfortable facts to get at the basis for terrorism, because
