In this day and age, such a plot would not be unusual. After all, people seem to be willing to undergo many procedures in order to look beautiful according to societys standards. They undergo plastic surgery with all its risks, eat very little food, and are deprived of nourishment, and they may even deplete their savings for the right clothing. They may become addicted to exercise or succumb to diseases or disorders that are attached to overeating or under eating. Dorian, in Oscar Wildes classic work, represents every person. While not everyone goes to the same lengths to look beautiful, everyone experiences the desire to capture youth. In examining this philosophy, the plot of the novel should be explored. It is important to note that while Lord Henry instigates the situation that ensues, it is Dorian alone who is responsible for his actions. In the piece, Dorian Gray is having a portrait of himself painted, but in embracing the philosophy of beauty and hedonism, he realizes that he will lose his youth, vigor, and beauty. What should he do? In an attempt to capture his youth, he sells his soul and instead of aging, the portrait ages in place of Dorians own flesh. Dorian wants this to occur: "If the picture could change, and I could be always what I am now" (Wilde 20). He gets his wish, but things do not pan out exactly the way he had hoped. The portrait ages as Dorian does bad deeds, but when Dorian decides to turn over a new leaf, it does not change anything. He cannot take back the deal that he made so ...
