SA 129rTV.rtf Columnist and novelist Anna Quindlen has not been intrigued by the new trend in television some call reality television. In fact, Quindlen wrote in a Newsweek article:" Never watched Survivor. never will. whats the point? Ive eaten bugs inadvertently myself, dozing in the hammock by the pond on a muggy summer evening" (2001, p.74). While many had the same reaction to the initiator of the reality TV genre, Survivor, many others followed the antics of the two tribes that slowly combined into one. In the first Survivor series that premiered in the summer of 2000, by the time the group was whittled down to three or four, many were glued to their seats, wondering who would win the money. In the end, the "naked gay guy" who rumor has it used sexuality as a strategy and may not be homosexual at all, won. The older, retired, military man, Rudy, who disliked homosexuals, was one of the last holdouts and the group dynamics made for a great show. Many tuned in, and so Survivor 2 was born. About Survivor 2, Dan French says: " I love Survivor. To me it exemplifies exactly what television does better than any other medium in history, namely, take absolutely inane human experience and make it entertaining enough to hold, even rivet, our attention" (2001, p.PG).
