vacation and the opportunity to finish her PhD. Silvia, however, wants to go home to Phoenix and find a job there, a regular 8-5 position. This paper discusses her parents
standpoint: that she should do as they wish and stay in Long Beach until she finishes her doctorate. Discussion There are several issues involved here, some obvious, some less so.
First, there is the fact that in this economy, jobs are very hard to find, and even talented people may not be able to locate a position quickly. Silvia seems
to think that all she needs to do is return to Phoenix and she will find work immediately. That may be true if shes as talented as she seems to
be, but odds are that it wont be that simple. Taking this a step further: how does she plan to live if she doesnt find work immediately? Has she
saved any money so that she can rent or buy her own place? Or is she perhaps thinking of returning to her parents home? If so, how do they feel
about this? Although we would like to think that we all are generous and kind where family members are concerned, this isnt true. Her return could disrupt her parents lives
to the point where it would be a difficult arrangement for everyone. Second, the university has made her a very good offer, especially in regard to helping her with her
PhD. The question immediately arises, why isnt she leaping at this? What has happened, or what does she think might happen, that she would rather walk away from such an
opportunity than stay in Long Beach and pursue her education? The salary alone is enough to make most people green with envy, and in a deepening recession it represents stability
