that would seem to be a good description of a prophet: The prophet is human, yet he employs notes one octave too high for our ears; He experiences moments
that defy our understanding. He is neither a singing saint nor a moralizing poet, but an assaulter of the mind. Often his words begin to burn where conscience ends. It
is as though the prophet may be human but he is not really as human as the rest of the population. He is a step beyond where normal humans are
in terms of passion, compassion and most importantly, a relationship with God. In another article, Heschel (1996) said: "The prophets words are an audible revelation of the invisible God" (p.
6). Based on Scripture as reported by Heschel, none of the prophets volunteered for the job. In fact, many were very reluctant to become Gods prophet. They did not consider
themselves righteous or sinless or any other great thing. They were just faithful people who believed in, obeyed and honored God in the midst of a polytheistic pagan society.
As a summary of what kind of person was the prophet, we can separate out comes of Heschels adjectives and descriptions for them: they were excitable and picked on things
