we are, or if its something innate-i.e., we were "born that way." This paper will do little to end the debate, because it sits on the fence and argues that both external and internal forces shape our personalities and character. Discussion As human beings, we are constantly changing and growing. Its a clich? but its also true that we are not who we were a minute ago; were not the same person now we will be a minute from now. We find, for example, things we believed no longer enthrall us; friendships change, love dies, values we once swore to uphold now leave us empty. But through all these changes in beliefs, values and ways of thinking, there is a core that doesnt change. The essential person, the ego, is recognizable though ideals and other things may change. How is this basic person formed? There are many theories; well examine a few. Robert M. Sapolsky argues that the differences between humans were shaped eons ago, by the lives of our ancient ancestors (Sapolsky). He tells a joke about a Swede and a Finn who sit drinking in silence for six hours, until the Swede finally toasts his companion: "To your health"; to which the Finn replies, "Look, did you come here to drink or to talk?" (Sapolsky). The two countries share a common border, but as Sapolsky points out, their cultures are quite different. He asks "why should Scandinavians be thought of as taciturn, and Mediterraneans as anything but?" (Sapolsky). He argues that where we live has a lot to do with the culture we grew up in, which in turn shapes who we are (Sapolsky).
