McNamara (2010) asserted that leaders establish the vision for the organization, they influence others, and they set the course or direction for the organization. Managers coordinate and organize. One of the clearest descriptions of the differences between leaders and managers is to look at the differences between single-loop adaptation and double-loop adaptations. Single-loop adaptations are those adjustments that are made to follow a predetermined course (Analytic Technologies, 2002). A home thermostat is a good example. The thermostat is set for 70 degrees, if the temperature goes above 70, it turns on the air conditioning, if it goes below, it turns on the heater. Double-loop adaptations adjust not just the actual temperature but the desired temperature. This is a very sophisticated and intelligent thermostat because it learns what times in the day the person changes the thermostat and adjusts itself according to those times (Analytic Technologies, 2002). A manager is like the single-loop adaptations and the leader is like the double-loop adaptations. The leader adjusts and adapts according to numerous variables, including external driving forces. The manager has a set of responsibilities and he has the authority to accomplish the goals (Analytic Technologies, 2002). Those goals were established by the leader. One of the reasons for some confusion about these two roles in businesses is the fact that at times leaders perform management tasks and managers lead their department. Zaleznik (2004) explained that leaders and managers "maintain the balance of operations, . . . leaders create new approaches and imagine new areas to explore" (p. 68). When discussing the differences between managers and leaders, Kotter said that "Everybody has got a little bit of each in them" (Blagg and Young, 2001).
