means of intercourse between man and man." This provides us with a very interesting foundation from which to understand what makes art because we must first eliminate the believe that
it is something that pleases. Many people may argue that art is pleasurable, but true art can be equally as disturbing, bringing to mind pain and suffering. In addition, understanding
that it is merely an inherent part of mankinds nature also helps us to establish a foundation from which we can better discern what makes art. Bearing these perspectives in
mind the following paper examines what makes art. The paper begins with an examination of the history of art and then moves on to examining whether or not a cultural
education is necessary in order to see and appreciate art. The paper finishes with a discussion of how different people perceive art. History of Art "The term for
ART in Greek (tekhne) and Latin (ars) does not specifically denote the fine arts in the modern sense, but was applied to all kinds of human activities. Art was characterized
by Aristotle as a kind of activity based on knowledge and governed by rules" (Witcombe, 2003). From this perspective an art, or trade, was something learned through the various rules
that applied to any given medium. "The Greeks applied rules as a means of bringing order to the perceived chaos of nature and the world around them. They consciously sought
order, clarity, balance, and harmony in their works" (Witcombe, 2003). With rules there was a sense of control. Today we may call such endeavors crafts, as opposed to arts. But,
