Respect is a quality that must be given in two ways: 1) outwardly toward the world and 2) inwardly toward the self. To respect outwardly but disrespect the self (such as by taking drugs) only achieves half the mission, which is unacceptable within the holistic nature of karate. Self-discipline is a quality learned through the various movements where the mind must be in complete control of the body at all times. To have self-discipline is to realize the difference between want and need; those who want something will often justify why they think they must have it now instead of making themselves wait just for the purpose of not acting impulsively. For example, children go to the mall and see a lot of toys, candy and other attractive things for which they beg and cry to their parents. They must have it all right now or they will be upset. While this behavior may be considered normal for children, in karate it is thought of as being very weak-minded. Self-control is another aspect of being a black belt that must exist in both body and mind.
