true or genuine leadership. These are: leading yourself; not being a monarch; being open to new ideas and different ways of doing things; establishing a genuine sense of commitment; finishing
the job; demonstrating genuine appreciation of employees; knowing that you always have to learn new leadership skills; and remembering the demographics are changing (Swindell, 2008). Swindells trait that he calls
leading oneself is related to being an active member of the organization and being self-motivated as opposed to just giving out directives. Another authors suggests the qualities of genuine
leadership are: collaborative, inventive, skilled, visionary, and mindful (Zou, 2007). Successful leaders today know that the best plans and processes are collaborative in nature. This approach motivates others. Leaders must
be inventive and can respond quickly when needed and they find new ways to accomplish the goals. Leaders must have both interpersonal skills and technical skills (Zou, 2007). One without
the other will not work. Many lists of the characteristics of effective leaders place vision at the top of the list. The reason is that the leader will not know
where they are going if they do not have a firm vision. Being mindful includes understanding organizational values and knowing how to work towards them. It also means remembering that
