The way in which human resources may be strategically can benefit the company enormously as a HRM encompasses a broad range of organisational issues. Strategic recruitment and retention merely a starting point, the human resource department may also be involved with training, career management, communication, motivation, maximisation of human capital including intellectual capital, the identification of potential future resources opportunities within the employee base and general culture management. It is when the HRM department is used in a proactive manner to help the company achieve its goals that HRM may be seen as strategic. By looking at the way the HRM may be utilised by a company and approaches which can be adopted the different potential strategic uses may be discussed. It has been noted in many companies that the ability to gain a competitive advantage has been the result of its employee base, this may be due to the level of service provided, as seen in the company such as Disneyworld differentiated due to service levels (Grant, 2004), it may be due to the high level of commitment and loyalty given to the company by the staff or and may be due to innovations and ideas which originate from the shop floor.
