Census Bureau defines a family as two or more people who are related by birth, marriage, or adoption living together (Crary, 2010). It has been a long time since the
majority of families have been comprised of a man, woman, and their children. The Census Bureau provides more leeway in defining the family but that composition is also in the
minority. How the public defines a family has changed over the last few decades and that definition continues to evolve. Over these decades, there has been a dramatic increase
in the number of single women raising children without a husband. There has been a dramatic increase in the number of male/female couples who have children and live together for
decades without marriage. There are also more and more gay and lesbian couples with or without children and living together as families. Same-sex marriage, adoption, and even foster-parenting children
has become more common in todays society. This is an issue that has caused severe conflicts with the religious right condemning these people and lobbying for laws that would prevent
them from marrying. Laws and regulations exist in many state that prevent same-sex couples from adopting children. Crary (2010) reports surveys with interesting, and in some cases, astonishing results.
In 2006, for instance, surveys reflected that 30 percent of respondents stated that pets would count as family but gay couples did not count as family so a pet is
more family than other humans. Singles do not count as family, either. While it is gratifying to an animal lover that at least some people consider a pet as part
