there will be 1.56 billion tourists globally (World Tourism Organization, 2002). The level of income that is generated by tourism is also key to the economic development and contribution of
many regions. For example, in 1999 59 countries all had gross revenue from tourism of more than $1 billion (World Tourism Organization, 2002). Tourism is in industry that is reliant
on the residents local to the tourist destination which may be a single attraction of an entire resort. The local resident provide the accommodation, facilitates and are many may gain
their main or only income form tourists. Despite this, for many residents the attitudes towards tourism may not be positive. There are many factors which appear to influence the attitude
of local residents towards the tourists. The development of tourist may transform a local community. There may be many positive benefits, such as increased income better facilities and
the provision of general economic stimulus to create a domino effect, The negativity will often result due to the way in which the local community changes, the level of control
the local residents have over this control, the impact this has on their lives and how this fits or clashes with the culture and values of the area. It
is recognised that for a tourist destination to be a long term success there needs to be the consideration of tourist-resident relations and the development of acceptable controls to limit
