the many. Expectancy theory is comprised of three factors: valence, instrumentality and expectancy (Value Based Management.net, 2009). Valence refers to how attractive and desirable the outcome is to the person,
expectancy is about how the employee perceives the relationship between their effort and their performance and instrumentality refers to the persons perceive relationship between performance and the outcome (Value Based
Management.net, 2009). In other words, how valuable is the outcome? Does the person think if they try hard they can achieve the outcome, and does the person think they can
really achieve the outcome. Goal or objective setting is another important model because the employee sets their own objective or goal. Lockes model for SMART goals is an excellent model
(Mind Tools, 2009). Using the acronym, the goal must be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound (Mind Tools, 2009). Individuals develop a commitment to achieve the goal because it is
realistic and because they will see their progress. Situational Assessment and Environmental Scanning All leaders must be able to assess the situation, which would incorporate an assessment of the
internal and external environments. A situational assessment must be an objective and honest look at the numerous diverse factors that will affect the organizations success in achieving its mission and
