in the villages of the bible in the time period. For serious scholars of religion, there are teachings alongside bible study. There is a background. The bible is then examined
in historical context and of course, this is the best way to look at any document. Yet, even without benefit of peripheral material, the bible itself is replete with artifacts
and clues as to what might be the case. How did the people live at the time? There are a variety of settings in the book of Judges. For example,
it is noted that the people went from the city into the wilderness (Judges 1:16 217). Interestingly, this notation suggests that the regions-though clearly not like our cities-were differentiated
by city and sparseness. There were people to live in very rural settings while others lived in more built up areas. Again, everything is relevant to the time in which
one lives. However, it does suggest a difference in terms of daily life and there was a significance to living in cities or wooded areas. In one story in
the book of Judges, a woman is pregnant and is told not to have any wine or strong drink (Judges 13: 4, 231). This is quite interesting as today,
women are told not to drink at all during pregnancy, and this is a rather new sentiment. They could not have known of the birth defects and the fact that
alcohol could really damage an unborn baby when Judges was put together. They simply did not have the technology to have that comprehension. Still, some rules did emerge. Of course,
it should be kept in mind that this is one story and is not necessarily applicable to the entire community. However, it provides a glimpse of ordinary life. In various
