and less polluting to the atmosphere as a whole. It involves passing pollutant-filled gasses through a liquid filter through one of various means, so that the liquid can perform some
type of filtration upon the gasses. Frequently, water it used as a way to absorb harmful pollutants and leave behind a significantly less toxic and harmful gas, which can then
be released into the atmosphere with less harm to the environment. Other types of gaseous filtration processes are also used to reduce
environmental pollution. One of the most common toxic pollutants to be found in flue gases and industrial gas emissions is sulfur dioxide. One way in which sulfur dioxide is commonly
released into the atmosphere is through the burning of coal, a common industrial and residential activity (Bishop, 2010). Frequently, those seeking to improve emissions standards add limestone to coal before
burning it, because limestone contains calcium carbonate, CaCO3 (Bishop, 2010). This calcium carbonate, when heated by the fires burning the coal, is converted into calcium oxide, CaO (Bishop, 2010). Then,
this calcium oxide reacts with the sulfur oxide (SO2), forming a solid compound, solid calcium sulfate, which then is prevented from escaping a coal stack and polluting the air (Bishop,
2010). The chemical equation for this process is: Calcium oxide + sulfur oxide + oxygen
-> solid calcium sulfate 2CaO + 2SO2 + O2 -> 2CaSO4 2.) Air pollution is not a problem caused merely
by the outdoor releasing of toxic gasses by industrial applications. The air inside ones home or in commercial buildings can become just as polluted as outdoor air, and in many
