Inasmuch as technological diversification has allowed humanity to pursue alternative health care choices, there appear to be more and more limits placed upon the extent to which western medicine can keep up with these alternative methods. This may have its obvious advantageous aspects in relation to prevention and treatment, yet there also exists a paradox of modern health care, in that society is becoming more aware and educated as western medicine begins to recognize both its strength and limitations. The history of western medicine has provided for a more conventionally prescribed remedy to combat illness and disease, choosing more invasive surgical procedures and pharmaceutical drugs as its primary treatment options. With the discovery of such lifesaving drugs as penicillin, western medicine has long been the forerunner throughout the medical community. Indeed, the beneficial attributes in relation to such discoveries earned western medicine a stalwart reputation. Recently, however, what was once considered the strength of western medicine has now become its limitation, in that the movement toward alternative methods has caused a portion of the public to eschew the western approach to health care. As good as western medicine has proven to be over the decades, there still exists unattractive qualities with this particular approach to health care.
