"were caught off guard" (Applebaum 7). Poland had won a majority of parliamentary seats, in Hungary the Communist party won parliamentary power and in Slovakia the so-called Social Democrats
replaced the Nationalists. The fear here lie in what many believed could be a resurgence of the Nationalist parties (Applebaum 7). Economic change must have cultural conformity in order
to exist; in turn, the desire for such conformity is what ultimately encourages nationalism. However, all too often what also comes with the concept of nationalism and cultural conformity
is the requirement of just one culture. This is where conflict begins, when people are not permitted to follow their own cultural beliefs in the name of nationalism (Applebaum
7). Throughout history, people have fought to uphold their personal sense of culture in the face of nationalism. It has been a difficult fight and one that not many
have actually won. Yet they continue to wage war against nationalistic tendencies to seek out cultural conformity in the name of a better and more productive state. At its
core, nationalism rips people apart from one another. This is clearly evident by observing activities that have transpired in various states around the world. People are continuously forced
to be what they are not and do not want to be, yet nationalism is still heralded as an improvement over how things were prior to nationalist intervention. One
of the most explicit examples of this concept is with the Bosnian war. The people who experienced such devastation were a depiction of how nationalism can go very wrong.
