wars against Islam led by power-mad popes and fought by religious fanatics" (Madden). As such they have generally been seen as the symbol of "self-righteousness and intolerance" as well as
having created "a black stain on the history of the Catholic Church in particular and Western civilization in general" (Madden). However, at the same time there is evidence, according to
some, that the times were so threatening, in relationship to the Muslims, that the Crusades were necessary to preserve the Christian way of life. The following paper examines the history
and discusses whether or not the Crusades were a justifiable religious undertaking. Were the Crusades a Justifiable Religious Undertaking? The first
Crusade involved Pope Urban II and Emperor Alexus I of Constantinople (The Christian Crusades 1095-1291). The pope had encouraged the Emperor in relationship to stressing the threat that the Turks
