Weight training can result in lowering blood pressure, decreasing blood cholesterol and triglycerides while increasing insulin sensitivity (Fahey 3). However, weight training is a complex subject and there are various techniques utilized in advanced weight training that an individual should consider when considering including weight training within a personal exercise program. The following examination of literature looks specifically at four advanced training methods: super sets; forced reps; pyramid systems; and periodization. Each method is defined and the pros and cons associated with each method are then discussed, prior to formulating conclusions. "Super sets" are defined as performing "an exercise set immediately after a different exercise set," with little or "no rest" taken in between sets ("Advanced...Techniques"). However, athletic trainer and fitness expert Patrick Dale points out that the normal "between exercises rest is taken before the next set of exercises is commenced" (Dale). An advantage of super sets is that this technique can improve body composition and endurance, as well as build strength (Dale). Super sets can also be performed in regards to antagonist muscle groups or as an "isolated exercise immediately before a compound exercise for the same muscle group," as this challenges "local muscle endurance" ("Advanced ...Techniques"). Performing super sets also keeps a workout short, while providing intensity. However, as supersets are quite intensive, over-done, this technique can lead to overtraining, which makes the individual more injury prone, as well as create too much stress on the immune system, leading to increased colds, flu etc. (Carpenter).
