a weight loss diet, Schwartz would have them go off the diet and they would soon gain back any weight they lost, plus several more pounds. By following this
pattern, three days on a weight loss diet, followed by normal eating, these clients soon reached their weight gain goals, and often exceeded them. Schwartz writes, "We warn them before
they start that once we get them going, they may not be able to stop the weight-gain process" (Schwartz, 1982, p. 4). As this anecdotal evidence points out, weight-loss diets
work well at lowering a persons metabolic rate, which often has the effect of compounding, rather than solving, the problem of overweight/obesity. As this suggests, there is a huge difference
between a diet that people hope will result in their achieving a normal, healthy weight and a diet that is designed to achieve optimum health, which includes maintaining a healthy
weight. Weight-loss diets that are touted in the media are so radically different from one another that it is difficult to the consumer to know which one to choose
and follow. There are diet that recommend eating high protein/low or no carbohydrates. Diets that recommend eating high carbohydrates but low fat, as well as no sugar diets, specialty food
diets (such as the grapefruit diet or the junk-food diet) and any other combination of foods that can possibly be considered. There are weight-loss programs that claim to have discovered
