use of physical and chemical restraints. The discussions associated with this analysis were telling, and provided new information to take to the Nursing Home Administrator and the Director of Nursing,
Education and Staff Development. The state of Pennsylvania had identified two deficiencies at the long-term care facility where I was employed, and the information gained in the course of
the educational needs assessment led administrators and the director of nursing to formulate some creative solutions of their own. Objective 3 required that
I design a self-review learning packet demonstrating competence of protection of patients and use of restraints. In the course of meeting the requirements of that objective, the Educational and
Staff Development Coordinator, RN, MSN evaluated content, accuracy, design and effectiveness of the information in the self-review learning packet. Ultimately, the final evaluation emerging from this review required several
meetings with the Educational and Staff Development Coordinator. I found I gained more benefit from my networking opportunities when I gave these experts
background in my goals and findings and encouraged them to play "devils advocate." If, as administrators, they could recognize few if any negatives or reasons that some specific approach
would not work, then the proposed solution seemed to be more promising than when I sought positive response from these experts (Sutcliffe, 1993). If going back to do things
