statement, "We are an investor-owned, ethically governed, profitable Italian foodservice company enriching home dining through quality products" provides guidance for both present and future decisions. Being ethically governed led
the company to decide to be HACCP-compliant within two years, which is admirable but practical as well. The company can believe that the regulatory "suggestion" will become mandatory in
the future; by being compliant early on it can focus on the business as competitors struggle with regulations. The short-term view is that becoming HACCP-compliant is cumbersome and expensive;
the long-term perspective of the mission statement leads the company to act in the present and focus on positive growth in the future.
The vision of offering authentic Italian dining precludes any contemplation of "reinventing the wheel," or offering Japanese sauces in Japan. The vision statement both allows and compels the company
to focus on its core business. Being timeless and broad-based provides guidance for the present and the future, without constraining the company in the face of technological or social
