Based on that relationship and your personal knowledge and experience with mentorship, how will you apply what you learned to mentoring others in the future? Be specific in terms of your plans. Theory-based nursing practice is the focus of much current nursing research and practice. Established, experienced nurses may be less familiar with theory than are new graduates. It is common practice for older nurses to mentor newer ones; new graduates fresh from study of theory also have the opportunity to teach as well (Hayes, 1998). Lewins change theory maintains that change is incremental and proceeds stepwise (Groups and group dynamics). The organization can assist this progression by hiring new graduates with solid knowledge of theory, which they can pass on to those more experienced in practice. There is increased focus today on theory-based nursing, and the organization supporting a mentoring program is better able to put theory into practice. The organization that views patients more as people than as cases is more "human," and therefore more attractive to those very human individuals filling its nursing positions. A mentoring program can help support those theories that hold to the view of both patients and nurses as being systems that interact for a common purpose. It would seem that those organizations most in tune with todays nursing focus also are those most likely to institute change to achieve a more theory-based approach to staffing and patient care.
