difficult to choose just one. Each made major contributions. Who knows more, who has more ability, who can learn faster and so on were questions that have been debated for
millennia. The textbook reports that tests were used as early as 2200 B.C. in China as a means of selecting employees for the government. While Darwin was studying evolution, his
half-cousin Francis Galton was investigating individual differences. It was David Wechsler who designed the first comprehensive intelligence test and the Wechsler as it has been revised over the years, continued
to be the most popular intelligence assessment tool in the field (Boake, 2002). Binets first focus had been to determine which students were slow or needed special help (Wilderdom, 2005).
Wechsler set out to design an instrument that would reveal people who were not just below the norm but those at the norm and above. Wechsler introduced his Wechsler
Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) in 1949. The WISC was the first real competition Binet had had. Wechsler criticized the Stanford-Binet because it was so verbal. By contrast, Wechslers Scale
is half verbal and half performance. Wechsler subsequently, in 1955, introduced a scales for adults, the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) and in 1967, he designed one for pre-primary children
